A New Zealand Actor in Trouble.
Inglis v. Ingiis.
The maiuiege of the petitioner and respondent, who were both young at the time, was solemnised at the St. Peucras New Church in Seplembe, 1863. Very shortly after their union the respondent, who was a clerk in the Bail way Clearing House, was guilty of personal violence towards bis wife, and he oj several occasions beat their infant child, a daughter only two months old, in her presence. On one occasion he held the child by its f;et, aud, swinging it round, threw it with violence on the sofa, and, fearing for its life, the petitioner placed it for protection under the charge of its grandmother. She herself had to leaved fiiiniu consequence of his continued, illtreatment, in November, 1864, and in the following year he went ' j Australia. After a brief slay in the coleny he returned to England, and some time afterwards he left ibis country for .New Zealrnd, where he joined the stage, aud acbievi. 1, it was said, considerable success and reputation as an actor. Tae last communication which his wife received from him was in 1868. In 1870 she heard that he was living at Dunedin or Otago, in New Zealand, with\a womnu who passed as his wife,' and with 'whom there was reason, it was sa; d, to suppose be had gone through a ceremony of marriage. The copy of the petition and citatio i in the suit were served upon him at Otago, in 1875, but, owing to the death of her then solicitor, who had taken up her cause out of sympathy, and want of means, the petitioner was unable to continue her suit until last year, when a commission was sent out to New Zealand, and evidence taken under it establishing the charge of adultery alleged in the petition against the respondent. " The cruelty with which he was also charged was likewise proved, and on these grounds, and on the prayer of the petitioner, the Court pronounced a decree nisi with costs.
