"M.D." V. TEMPERANCE.

(To the Editor of the Evening Stab.) Sib,—l wiU also render whet p^sistanee I can to diminish the evils of intemperance which we all deplore, and which,- I believe, statistics prove to be increased or diminished according to tbe increase or diminution in the number of public houses. I have no doubt that pll good hotel-keepers will go this length, for it cannot be. that either their interest or judgment favors the continuance of places which cause people to regard hotelkeepers as not foiling a respectable class in the community. There are several ways of preventing intemperance, an evil which cannot be cured at once, and one way seems to me to consist in baying as highly respectable men as possible in the spirit trade. But besides that we cannot forget that d ink, like most things which work on the human passions, with the increase of supply produces en increase of demand, and hs'ice the danger of the community seeing tbat the ■ legislature is preparing means to remedy the et'h, I tlink we should put ourselves in a \ -siiion to give effect to tbe good hours that may be made for us. It is well known tbat the Engl'sh Church and the Eomrn Catholic Church ia England are moving for social refo. in in this matter, md in the colonies rll the churches will find that they may herein work one way for, the common good.—l am, &c, S. J. Neill.
