Late advices say the Chilians had taken Tacna after a severe struggle, and were advancing on Arica. a Peruvian eocst port. It is probable, following this victory, peace will be offered Peru.

Italy has taken the initiative ij regard to the claims to be presented to Chili for compensation Cj foreigners, in consequence of the bombardment of various towns in Peru and Bolivia. France and England have adhered to Italy's course. In the House of Commons, May 27, Sir Charles Dilke said the Government was well aware of the injury to trade caused by the war, and was desirous of offering its friendly services in the matter. Such friendly overtures, he continued, have, hitherto, becnineffectuul, but the Government had been, and is, in communication with other Governments on the subjects, and if a favorable opportunity for mediation should offer, it would avail it-ielf of it.

A tremendous explosion took place at a torpedo factory, Ancon, Peru, May 1, destroying the building and killing every inmate. Six houses adjoining were levelled to the ground.
