CHRISTCHURCH.

Saturday

At a sale of racehorses this morning, Mirelle,, by Traducer, out of Opera, fetched £40; Satellite passed at £90; Poud'a Bore, £45; and Blazing Star at £27103. This day. At an inquiry on the body of S. Duffo, a railway porter, who was killed at Addington railway station oa Friday, a verdict of " Accidental death" was returned. Some of the jurymen remarked on the dangerous practices of railway employees riding on the brake handle, and considered that a man aged 55 was too old to be engaged at shunting work. Fire.

Ou Sunday a firo took place in the morning just before 12 o'clock at the corner of Durham and Tuam streets, near St. Michael's Ohuch. The wind was blowing from the south-west at the time, and several small cottages were burnt down before the Brigade could master the fire. The scene was a nest of small and old wooden houses, luckily of uo size, as had there been a good body, the fire would hare caught Eose's timber yard, as it was close at hand, and in the track of the flames, and would have probably not easily be stopped. The insurances are not known at present, neither is the origin of the fire.
