Loss of the Calypso,

A telegram was received in town today announcing the loss of the ship Calypso, which was run down off Margate. All hands were saved. The Calypso was commanded by Captain Hird, and left Port Chalmers for London on Jan. 19 with 19 passengers. Her cargo corisisted of 4376 bales of wool and sundries of the total value of £87,896. She was owned by Captain Leslie and others, and was fully insured, all Colonial offices having full Hues on her. Fire. A fire occurred at Naseby last night. A house and furniture belonging to Major W. Wandsley was destroyed. It was j insured for £300 in the Norwich Union, I but the amount will not cover the loss. Fatal Acoi&ent on a tram car. A boy named Edward Haughton, who had jumped on to one of the tram cars i unobserved, fell while getting from one I car to another, and the wheels passed over his legs. He died in the Hospital this morning, Butler's Case. Butler's case continued all day. A number of witnesses were examined. The case was remanded till the following day. Through the day the police were hardly able to keep the approaches to the front door clear of the crowd. £. M. Haggot conducted the case for the prose* cution, and prisoner defended himself. The Judge remarked that he was sorry he had determined to do so.
