Ball to the Champion and Representatives.
A most successful ball was held iast night in the Academy of Music in honor of the Carbine champion, Petty Officer Thorn as of the Naval Brigade, and the Thames representatives at tne meeting of the Rifle Association at Nelson. The Hall was very tastefully decorated, and the whole appearance, with the gay dresses of the ladies and the uniforms of the Volunteers, was most pleasing. The following.were a number of those present: His Worship the Mayor and Mrs fihrenfricd, Mr Brodie, (County Cheirman), Mr and Mrs McCullougu, Major , and Mrs Murray, Lieut, and Mrs Perry, Mr Brassey, Captein end Mrs Watson, i Lieut, Gaviu Nvß., Lieut. Barlow H.K., , Lieut, and Mrs Denby, Mr and Mrs Mahoney,. Mr Carrick, Quarter-master and Mrs Symington, Mr Fblay, Mesdames Belcher, irx'unter, and Randal, Mr J, Thorborn, Mr Symondß, Lieut. Burton N.B. and Miss Burton, Lieut Grant, Lieut, and Mrs Lawless N. 8., Mr and ;Mrs Clarke, Mr Hennelly, Lieut. White IS.C., Lieut. Gordon N.B, Mr Crump, Mr G. Wilson, Mr A. Thorburn, Mr D. Cloonan, JVIr and Mrs Coombes, &c, &c, Mr Rolleston, Minister of Lends, and Mr Maginnity, General Manager of Telegraphs, having arrived from Auckland, were invited to the ball, and were publicly , welcomed by the Mayor. Mr Rolleston replied to the remarks of His Worship, and said that his introduction to the lh»mes was a- niost .pleasing one ; he was making the acquaintance of the people of the place before he had seen their district. The whole proceeding went off well, and the committee of management are to be congratulated.
