RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THIS DAY.

(Before H. Kenrick, Esq., R.M.) FAILING TO SUPPORT.

John Fitzgibbons was charged, on the information of Mr J. B. Mason, Relieving Officer, for failing to support his wife <Jane Fitzgibbons. Defendant said he had no work.

Jane Fitzgibbons deposed that her husband had not provided support for herself or family since December. His intemperate habits prevented his getting work. She could support herself if her husband was away. She had been receiving public relief.

. Order made that defendant pay £1 per week, and the costs of the information.

DHUNKENNESS

A native known as " Friday" was punished in the usual manner for this offence.

A CHIMNEY A-FIBE

W. Burns was fined 10a for permitting the chimney of his house to take fire.

THREATENING LANGUAGE

Charles Rolton was charged with using threatening language towards one G. A. Reddish.

Defendant pleaded not guilty. George Reddish deposed that he was on the wharf preparing to go out fishing, and defendant jumped up, and putting his fist in his face, said, " I will tbrow you overboard." He used other language of a threatening nature. Used no threatening language to defendant. t David Craigie, sworn, gave corroborative evidence.

Defendant made a statement to the effect that he had given no provocation to plaintiff, who called him a " lousy sod " and a lousy something else. The defendant's, boat was adrift and endangered his craft. . . - .

Two small boys gave evidence to that effect, and defendant's statement was further corroborated by a steamer hand, wbo also stated- that the Shortland fishermen were continually quarrelling. Case dismissed, each party to pay their own costs.

ASSAULT.

A case of assault against Biri, a native, was adjourned, the summons not having been served.
