A petition having been presented to the Governor praying for the commution of the sentence of death passed upon Joseph Wells, found guilty of shooting William Murphy with intent to murder in connection with the sticking up of the National Bank at Cunnamulla in January last, His Excellency has had the case under his consideration, but has refused to commute the sentence of death. He will be hanged on WeJnesday next. Sydney, Friday.

The first prizes have been awarded Kaiapoi and Mosgiel for flannels; for blaukets Mosgiel had obtained second prize, and Kaiapoi 3rd. In tweeds, Mosgiel Ist and Kaiapoi 3rd; in woollen fabrics Mosniel obtained 2nd prize ; mats Cook, Wellington; cord-tape, Behan, Waikawo; wool-work, Lawless, Thames ; counterpane, table cloth, Jordon, Dunedin, all vof whom obtained 3rd prizes. There were sundry exhibits which obtained fourth prizes. Mr Stephens, mate of the steamship Wakatipu, has beeu seriously injured whilst engaged unloading the vessel. Mehsotjene, Friday.

Telegrams to hand from London state that Gifford's refrigerating process has been a brilliant success, and the results highly satisfactory. The meat has proved to be an excellent substitute.
