CONCERT OF SACRED MUSIC.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib, —It is a somewhat singular coioci* dence, with the paragraph in- last Tues« day evening's Star, intimating that, a number of ladies and gentlemen purpose giving a concert of sacred music, that, in another column should appear a tort of an apology defending the idea, (original of course), but doubtless emanating through '.he reported success of one recently given in Auckland by the Mammoth Minstrels — a company of gifted and thoroughly competent musicians, able to carry out successfully such a performance. Iv the present instance one is forcibly reminded of an old fable, " The Prog and the Ox." The writer of the letter after sneering at the ministers of religion attempts to cloak his ambition and that of two or three others to display their superior attainments in " riraaic of the high class ". under the plausible plea that it is in aidy>f charity, yet in reality to afford an opportunity of obtaining additional laudations and thanks for themselves, to the utter exclusion of all others, however valuable their assistance, and who are only looked upon as supernumerics and nonentities, in other words necessary evils. If a desire and intention does exist to benefit the cause of charity, to ensure success financially, which should be the object of all, let there be a concert or any other kind of entertainment given in which all who assist thereat may have as nearly as possible an equal show (or there will soon be a falling off in the ranks), and of such a nature as to suit all classes in this diversified community, such a one as all can understand and appreciate; to take place on a suitable occasion, when no one's religious convictions • would be interfered with.—l am, Ac, Mediocsity.
