REMARKS ON LOYALIST.
(To ibe Editor of iho Evening Star.) Sib,—With many others I was astonished at the statements made in a letter signed " Loyalist," in your issue of last night. It is certainly the first time I ever saw the Covenanters and .Puritans described as "Fenians," or the " Men of Ulster " as " Rebels." The whole letter induces a feeling of sadness that any person holding the position of " Loyalist " should so far forget his duty to his Queen and country, as to endeavor, for the sake of carrying favour with the Catholic party at the Thames, to foment ill-feeling; between the fellow ci izens of New Zealand. Why not leare alone these matters, which are past and gone many, years, and do not belong to this country. Besides the facts are not fairly stated, wrong and untrue impressions are conveyed, and no good isdone by effusions of this character. The only logical conclusion to be drawn from them is that " Loyalist" corertly . recommends Irishmen to take up arms like the Covenanters and PuritanSffhud commence a ciril war to obtain Home Kule.. Possibly they .may do so, but as we confessedly bare home rule in New Zealand, what good does it do to stir up grievances amongst us here. If" Loyalist" dosires to be a- martyr let him put bis name and rank to the next letter of this kinS that he publishes, then he will show his willingness to suffer something for his advocacy of what he is pleased.to call the cause of Ireland. Every true English' man is willing to do his utmost to redress any real grievance the Irish people may suffer under, but very few desire to see Ultramontainism rampant in Great Britain. This is the great secret, which will sooner or later have to be settled with blood and- iron—according to the Prophet Wood, and most thoughtful men believe it.—-I. am, &c,
Fairfax.
