Last evening Dr ' Hector gave his lecture it the Athenaeum on the geology of Hawke's Bay. In the course of his remarks he referred to the probability of finding valuable minerals, including gold, on the western slope of the Kaimanawha ranges, not on the eastern, where gold had been generally sought. He , also stated his belief that valuable coal might be discovered in the secondary range running parallel with the coast and indicated the spur of the hills on the Woburn estate, Mr Purvis Russell's, as a place near the railway where indications were favorable to the presence of coal. He hoped that the ranges would soon be more fully explored for coal by local efforts.
