Last night,
A Portuguese named Joseph Barreira, cook at Sir Cracroft Wilson's, was yesterday arrested oh a charge of larceny. He almost immediately swallowed a quantity ofjstrichnene. He was taken to" the Hospital, where prompt measures were taken, but for some time he was in great danger. This morning he is much better, and will probably recover. The 100 yds race between Toohill, of Timaru, and Hulston, was won by Hulston, hands down.
The Amberly Races came off to-day. Weather fine. There was a poor attendance, owing to the postponement. Kuma won' the Cup, and Snukar the Handicap. Chiarini's Circus has not yet been able to open on account of the weather. The same cause detained the steamer with the animals on board.
At a meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, a letter was rccei?ed from the Auckland Club, in consequence of which the disqualification was removed from Owen McGee.
