WELLINGTON.

Last night.

Sailed: Rolorua for Sydney via East Coast and Auckland. Passengers: Dr and Mrs Parrell, Major Wilson, Messrs Howden, McNeight, Murray, Nasb, Clinthurn, Bonney, Bundle, McCullough, and Kelly. The preliminary enquiry into the circumstances connected with the steamer Tui striking on the rocks at the Heads on Sunday morning was held before' the Collector of Customs this afternoon. The Captain attributed the accident to a want of sufficient steam on the vessel, and the length of time taken •in setting the foresail. The Captain said he noticed some of the men looked queer on leaving the wharf, and he could not say they were quite sober. He noticed that a board had been removed from the bulk head, and that a case of brandy was four bottles short when the cargo was taken out to go to the pilot station. The engineer and man were examined, but nothing further was elicited. . It is believed that slips on the Wellington-Featherston railway will be cleared by to-morrow. The cable steamer Agnes leaves for Sydney to-morrow, and will take a series of soundings along the line of the cable between Sydney and New" Zealand. The sale of the Maryborough estate was conti-iurd to-day, but few sales were effected.

Arrived: Sarah Pile, from Kaipara; Rotorua, from the South; Oreti, from Manukau and Northern ports; Sophia R. Luhrs and Edwin Baaset, barques, and tho brig Neptune, from Newcastle. Sailed: Itotorua, for Sydney and Auckland, via East Coast.
