WELLINGTON.
Last night. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon a deputation was appointed to wait on the Government urging that the material in which goods were packed he exempt from duty. Sailed: Hawera, for Auckland via East Coast. The damage to the steamer Tui, which struck at the Heads yesterday, is far more serious than was at first expected, about a dozen of Iht plates needing replacing, which will take a fortnight, and cost nearly £603. The sale of the Martinborongh estate, consisting of 40,000 acres, situated in the Wairarapa Valley, took place to-day, and was well attended. Several of the sections raised fair prices, and the remainder passed in. John Wilthout, charged with larceny at Oaraaru, was remanded to Oamaru, and sent down by the steamer Kingarooma today. Sailed: liingarooma, for Melbourne via South ; Taiaroa, for Picton and Nelson.
