The Criminal Sessions.
The Criminal Session of the Supreme Courfc opened to-day before the Chief Justice. Only one person in the calendar who could not read or write, so it was not ignorance or poverty as in some communilies crime was attributable to, that caused the present calendar. Eeferring to tbe Poverty Bay caae sent here the Chief Justice said some fixed rule should be laid down by which committing Justices should.not be allowed at will or upon the instigation oi any person, to fix that tho trial should take place elsewhero unless with the sanction of the Supreme Court. The New Zealander says if Sir George Grey retires it would be a death-blow to the Liberal cause. It must not be that Sir G. .Grey- should retire altogether, though perhaps it may ultimately be in difference to party opinion that he may be asked to resign the leadership, and hold a portfolio. In the event of the above course being adopted, it thinks Macaudrew would be the ■ leader and most probably acceptable to all parties.
