Mr George Ellis, of Napier, who is at present on a visit here, has offered Messrs Gouk and Henderson £600 to be permitted to " stand in M in the Taupo contract with them. This was refused, though Mr Ellis guaranteed to get the Taupo off for a quarter of the tend3r, and without any of the elaborate paraphernalia of scbooners, etc., being brought from Auckland. 'He says there is no real difficulty whatever in the matter. Messrs Gouk and Hawkeswood ought to make an uncommon good thing out of the contract. / • \ ..
