A meeting of ualives suorjaotied by a chief named Paora Tutaowha wjs held here yesterday afternoon to consider Te Whiti's action re the Waimate plains. The spercbeT were of a pacific nature, t'.ie various speakers urging upon their peoph not to counten-.nce Te Whiti's proceedings, but rather to quietly dispose of their land to Goverrmr it who would pay them for it. It was however ma-'i'dned with regard to the Waimate that Sir J)ouald McLean had promised to g"ve a certain portion of it back, and pay a certain sum per acre fo"* all thai was taken. A fine day for the regatta; little wind. Maiden Kace.—Wanganui Club boat fbst, Wellington Stars second, Unions third. Won easily. The Union boat broke an oar soon after starting. The Wellington men were overmatched. Senior Inrigged Boats; 2 miles. —Unions first, Wajganui second, Wellington Stars third. The boats got away well together, but the Unions won easily. Wanganui beat the Wellington crew by 28 lengths.
