Visit of the Scientists.

Yesterday morning Professors Brown and Dlrich and Dr Hector (accompanied by the Mayor) walked through the Xaraka district by way of the Creek right to the head, thence by the Lucky Hit across into Tinker's Gully and Tararu. The ground set apart for the Karaka and Tararu Tunnel Company was examined, and other points of interest received attention at the hands of the visitors. Dr Hector said that the country is likely some day to become a great silver-producing district. He remarked the similarity ot the country and formation to the Virginia silver country, and the famous Comstock, which he has visited and carefully inspected. This morning the Doctor and Professor Ulrich were about betimes, and visited various mines, obtaining specimens and further information for future treatment. Amongst other things Dr Hector was furnished with specimens of the lead and silver ore from the mine discovered by Hetherington and party, on which he promises to furnish a report at an early date. After visiting the Beveral mines where it was believed they could obtain the best insight into the nature of the country, the Professors were taken by the Mayor to the reservoir of the Thames Domestic Water Supply, which was carefully examined. Samples of the water are to be forwarded to i)r Hector, who has promised to have analyses made and the results forwarded j also some suggestions for preserving the water from pollution and insuring its proper filtration. The visitors returned to town about 1 o'clock, and left for Auckland by the Kotomahana at four. We trust substantial good will follow the visit of these scientific gentlemen to this district.
