OHINEMURI.
(FBOM OUB OWN COBBEBPONDENT.)
Paeboa, February 15.
Major and Staff SergeantMajor Grant came up yesterday for the purpose of organising the Ohinemuri detachment of volunteers in connection with the Thames Scottish Battalion. There was a very good muster last night, at the Public Hall, of intending members and others who sympathised with the movement. Mr Johnson gave a brief account of what steps had been taken by the promoters, and then called upon Major to inform the meeting as to the position of affairs and what was necessary to be done. —Major Murray then addressed the meeting at some length, and concluded by exhorting intending members to avoid lukewarmness, as it was only by strict attention to duties that they could render themselves efficient, and thus keep up the good name that the Thames corps had won. He then called upon those present whose names had been submitted to the Government to step forward. After they had fallen in other intending members were requested to fall in on the left. They were duly proposed and accepted by the original members, and the whole of the company was sworn'in. Many were unavoidably absent, but some were sworn in this morning by A. J. Allom, Esq., J.P., and Sergeant-Major Grant, and the remainder will take the oath as opportunity off rs. The company or detachment, which is to be called the No. 3 T.S.V. may be now considered as 40 strong, out of which number twenty-six have already been sworn in. Several gentlemen have joined as honorary members, and others are expected to do so shortly. Mr James Collins was elected Sergeant, and will act as local drill instructor, and Mr H. D; Johnson was elected to act as Secretary, with rank of Staff Sergeant. It was resolved to meet for drill every Saturday evening at 7 o'clock. Votes of thanks were accorded by acclamation to Major Murray and Sergt.Major Grant for the trouble they had taken in coming such a long distance to give us the necessary assistance in forming the company. Similar votes were also accorded to Messrs Collins and Johnson for the action they had taken in the matter. After the meeting broke up, Mr Muir, tailor to the battalion, who was in attendance, took the necessary measurements for the supply of uniforms. Everybody was well pleased that the company had been so successfully formed. There is to be a meeting in the Hail tonight for the purpose of getting up races and sports in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. The Key. E. Laishley is expected to preach here to-morrow, both morning and evening. The Rev. W. E. Mulgan preached here last Sunday evening, and announced that he would hold * communion service on. the morning of the 9th March. The Eev. Mr Fulljames had been announced to preach last Sunday morning, but did not put in an appearance.
