Notwithstanding the advice of Judge Williams to the Government regarding the murderer Walsh, His Excellency has been advised to commute his sentence to imprisonment for life, but it is said the Governor has not quite given his formal concurrence. It is ascertained that the cause which led to the recommendation that Walsh's sentence should be commuted to imprisonment for life was the mental condition of the prisoner when he committed the murder. The Customs revenue for the past financial half year amounts to £682,084 which shows an increase on the estimates of the Colonial Treasurer of about £45,000.
