ALEXANDRA.

Thursday.

The Native minister and a large staff arrived here yesterday afternoon. Uewi came down from Punui to visit him this morning. Eewi with Mr Sheehan will

wait until afternoon to meet the King of Rarotobga, who is on bis way up to visit Tawhiao. The Native Minister then re-

turns via Hamilton.; ' ' ,Mr Shoehan's party arrived to-day,' accompanied by Major Te Wheoro, Te Tapihana, and *Pikia^and other chiefs of Waikato. They were welcomed heartily in the usual custom. Tapihana made a long speech, saying he thenceforth intended to follow the work of Potatau, to the effect that he would collect and protect all the Maoris and Europeans, and treat with kindness his children. He said that he now intended to go on in peace, and never use a weapon of bloodshed. Fikia spoke in the same strain. Eewi, on arrival, was welcomed by all present, and conducted to a large room in the hotel, where Farua and Paul Tuahere, of Orakei, and the aforementioned chiefs, welcomed him, and a korero i was held, at which the feeling was expressed that he had to come to take up the standing held by him in former days. Rewi said he would follow the path traced by Sir George Grey, and reiterated his sentiments several times in different language. The party afterwards visited the site of a pa where the Ngapuhi attacked the Waikatos 56 years ago, under Hongi, when more than 2000 Waikatos were killed, owing largely to a panic.

This day. Mr Sheehan and party are still here. It is reported that the King of Karotonga has arrived. The Ngatimaniopoto chiefs who called to-day's meeting object to the Native Minister-being present. , - Eewi is here.
