There were present—Major Murray, Mrg Kiijfour, Miss.Belcher, Mr and Mrs T. Eawdon and a. number of other visitor?. The r head teacher, Mr Grey, opened thb proceedings with an address to the pupils, ,m-which he impressed - upon them the importance, of Regular, attendance^ and the new regulation' 'of the Minister of Education for moving children through the several grades. He also referred to the handsome present of books made by Mr T. Eawdon, and read the. awards as follows: —Arithmetic: Henry James Greenalade, Ist price; Agnes Coutts, 2nd; Charles Smith, 3rd. Geography: tlst, Archibald Mathieson; 2nd, Alexander \Weirjr 3rd, Frederick Heninessy. General, Proficiency: Ist, William George Edmunds; 2nd, Letitia Walker;. 3rd, Margaretta Walker. Mr Brodie's money prizes for. composition were . given as follows:—lst, (15s) Eose Harerfield ; 2nd, (ss) Wilhelmina E. Carnie. Mrs Skeen's prize (a valuable book) for the best formed figures fell to Adam McNiece. Miss Stanton's prize (a silver thimble) for thd greatest improvement in sewing fell'to Maggie Coutts. and Miss Hamilton'■ prize to the junior division for the greatest improvement in writing to Willie Crqsbie. The prizes were handed to the recipients by Mrs Kilgour, who accompanied each with a few words of congratulation and- encouragement. The..Head Master then read over.a list of awards | : for the ordinary school prizes, which, he said, would be presented at the annual •chool fete in Tararu Gardens on the 23rd tJanuary, 1879. The remainder of the proceedings were of- an interesting chaonacter, but owing to limitations of space we have to curtail our report.
