AN EXPLANATION.

' (To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,-—My attention has been called to the list of subscribers to the fund raised for the relief of the wives and children of the ill-fated men .who lost their lives in the " Colombo," published in your journal a few days ago, and in this ' morning's Advertiser,' wherein it appears that my list (£2 ss. 6d) has not been received. Now, I must say, in fairness to myself, that although acquainted with one of the.late victims of that boat disaster (James Benney), I was not furnished with ' a list; neither was I asked for a. subscription, which, undoubtedly, I would have given, however small, and that the mistake must have occurred through a gentleman getting the necessary authority to collect, whose patronymic closely resembles my own, I would have taken no notice of the affair were' it not

for the unpleasantness which has arisen of late by a too exacting public in questioning the honesty of purpose of certain philanthropic gentlemen engaged in the laudable work- of assisting a widow and her orphans; and, as I hare been very often entrusted with the like meritorious work, I deem it incumbent upon me to set myself right with the public, Apologising for trespassing so much on your valuable space, I am, &c. ' ■ M. Landebs. Thames, October, 14,1878.

[On making enquiries we found that the list was Mr Lauder's (sometimes spelt Loder), and it, with the amount, has been received.—Ed.] ,
