THE UNEMPLOYED.

A meeting of Borough Councillors, for the purpose of receiving a deputation of the unemployed, was held at the Council Chambers at noon to-day. There were present : Messrs Speight, Hansen, Brassey, Mennie, Price, McGowan and Wilfeon. There was a large number of working

men present. Mr Speight was voted to the chair, and asked those present if they were all unemployed, and as there was no answer he said they would suppose that they were all out of work. He then asked the unemployed if any of them had any proposal to make or anything to say. One of the men said it was not a bit of use putting them to break stones, and many of them could earn next to nothing at it.

The Chairman informed the unemployed that during the coming week arrangements would be made with the County Council, so that some of the unemployed would be employed on road work.

One of the unemployed, said if some of the men went there would be more work for those who remained.

The Chairman then requested the unemployed to leave their names, number of family, and time they were < out of work. The Council would consider what should bo done for those who wanted to leave the place.

' The Town Clerk then took down the names of the men present, and of. them only six—five laborers and one carpenter —wished to go. A number of the men accepted'stone breaking temporarily. The meeting then broke up, the men being informed that the Council will meet the County Council on Tuesday.
