In going into Committee of Supply a long discussion ensued upon the item £250 for clerk and Hansard reporter, Messrs McLean, Atkinson, Fox and Saunders objectng to one who was the private secretary of the Premier and a civil servant being a Hansard' reporter.. They maintained t'jat Ue principle was wrong, and the offices should not be combined. They were willing the Premier should have as many secretaries as he liked, but let none of them be Hansard reporters. The Premier and Mr Ballance showed that a similar' staij of things existed for years in regard- lo the present secretary of the Cabinet, and that the arrangement was at once beneficial and economical to the country. . • Major Atkinson divided the House, and the item was retaitfed by 36 against 14. The items for stamps, Registrar General, explanation survey and mines, printing and stationery, and electoral were passed unaltered after a very brief discussion.
On the item charitable, £50,000, a long discussion arose, a good deal of objection being taken to the partial way in which hospitals were treu ,ed, those in the country receiving no assistance from the Government, while those in large wealthy towns were very largely subsidised by Government. An attempt was made to report progress without passing the vote, which was defeated, and eventually, on the Government giving an assurance that the whole question would be dealt with on a general principle, the vote passed, and the House adjourned at two a.m.
