Last night Father Henneberry addressed a crowded congregation in the Catholic Cathedral, when he emphatically denied having made the statement that mixed marriages were no marriages at all. and characterised the accusation as a " base and wicked falsehood." After the service he referred to the expenses incurred in renovating the Cathedral, and then told those who were wil'.ing to subscribe towards defraying the same to stand up, when the whole congregation stood up en masse. Father Henneberry and three priests then went amongst the people, and shortly afterwards announced that eleven hundred pounds had been subscribed.
The pockets of a waiscoat belonging to O'Oonuor, lately convicted of attempting to poison Light, a publican, have been analysed by Dr Hector, and found to contain poison. A. meeting has been called by the Mayor for this evening, with the object of petitioning the Governor to mitigate O'Connor sentence, but this will probably now collapse. . . A sharp shock of earthquake felt here at 11.40 on Saturday night. Saturday. The board of management here for the South British Insurance have received private information that the following insurances are effected on the Hydsradad cargo :—South Australian, £200; Mercantile Marine of South Australia, £2,500; New Zealand. £2,400; Adelaide, £2,0C0 ; j .National of South of Australia, £2,000 ; National of New Zealand, £2,000; Victoria, £1,750 ; New South Wales, £1,720; Globe, £1,500; Merchants, £1,5C0 ; Netherlands, India, £1,500; Imperial, £1,500; South British, £1,000; Southern, £500.
The Colonial Government s.s. Hinemoa sailed with the supplementary mail for San Francisco at 5 o'clock for the Manukau, calling at Taranaki. Among her passengers are Chief Justice and Mrs Prendergast, and the Chief Justice's Secretary, the Hon. Mr Burns (Post-master-General .of New South Wales), and Colonel Glover.
The s.s. Hinemoa brings back the Northern members for the ensuing session of Parliament.
