RE BOROUGH CONTRACTS.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sib,—With your permission I will trespass on your valuable paper for a brief space "Ec Borough Contracts." In your issue of the 9th instant I notice some remarks in connection with laying the 9inch water pipes, by one who styles him■elf unemployed. What a pity such a painstaking man, in other people's affairs (mark you), should have to style himself as such! Now, sir, he seems to mo to hare been fully employed in following up my work from .the commencement to Saturday ; last, he professes to know the the time and' money the job has cost so far. Let him think so; I shall not trouble to correct him in detail, any further than' to say, his statement is untrue. He goes on to say—not considering the assistance of Mr Laurie, which would hare lowered any tender sent in at least £20; that is to say that Mr Laurie is helping me with my work. I deny it in toto. Mr Laurie does no more for me than his duty as inspector requires of him. Then he goes on to what chance has a legitimate contractor to tender against this. Now he blames the committee for accepting my tender, I take it for such when he says there was only one tender that might hare paid 6s per day, and that was the highest (no doubt his own); but in that he is mistaken. I pay more than that, and if the work don't pay the loss is mine. He treats the committee as if they were children, and did not know what they were about. What a pity they did not hare such a man to guide them? It appears to me "Unemployed" is full of Tindictireness and spleen—first of all, he abuses the contractor, next Mr Laurie, then the engineer and committee, and, finally, throws out a dirty slur about a champagne feed, thereby trying to injure ah outside person. With these remarks I conclude, and I am sorry to see your valuable paper occupied with such, miserable matter.—l remain, &c, John McDbbmott. 1 March 11th. 78.
