THE LATE ASSAULT CASE.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sis,—ln reading your report of the assault case, Peterson y. Constable Scott, I was not only surprised, but was disgusted with the closing remarks reported to have been made by ourR.M. I always thought it was the duty of those in authoiity to protect and assjst tho police to puc down rowdyism, but my opinion of our R.M. is, that he is at times more inclined to court popularity than to do justice. The decision and remarks by our R.M. can, in my opinion, have no other effect than to prevent the police from interfering with rowdies, and street fights. And if those in authority were to take the same view of the matter as I do, in place of removing Constable Scott from the force, would remove him to a district where he would be likely to receive justice. The fact—in my opinion—is this, that Captain Fraser is getting too selfconceited, and wants taking down a peg— *' possibly two would do him no harm."— I am, (fee, Justice. [We do not see how the Magistrate could arrive at any other decision after hearing the evidence in tho case referred to by " Justice," and although we do not appa^ve of lectures from the Bench as well'as punishment, the position of the defendant warranted the remarks made by the R.M.~Ed.]
