THE SEA SERPENT.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib, —In reference to the sensational article appearing in the Auckland Erening Star about the great Sea Serpent seen bj the passengers, captain, and crew of the steamship .Durham,- I beg to place before your readers a true account of the same. On passing Brown's Island, I and oth?rs were standing on the deck of the steamer, when one of the passengers tittered a loud scream, exclaiming at the tame time, " What the Detil is that P It must be the great Sea Serpent!" The captain, crew, and passengers immediately rushed on deck to make an observalien of the occurrence. One of the passengers offered to bet his bottom dollar that it was the «ame fish as lately seen on the coast of New South Wales; he knew it bj the description. I being about the only sober passenger on board, thought it worth while to go on deck to contemplate this lutns maria. Guess my astonishment, Mr Editor, when I at once discovered that the object of universal attention and wonder was nothing more nor less than the Bean Sock Lighthouse, with its glaied windows reflecting the rays of a powerful sun, resembling, as many thought, the two eyes of the great serpent.—l am, Sec, Anothbb Passingxb. Shortland, February 26th, 1878.
