Sir George Grey and tbo Hon. J. Sheelian addressed a public meeting last night. Orer 800 were present. Sir George Grey made a very .telling .and eloquent speech. He referred to matters of a local nature, to tbo * mountain road opening, to Mokau, and to the policy tbo Government proposed to submit to Parliament next session. • .... .
i Mr Sheeban then addressed the meeting. Ho shadowed forth the Native policy of the Ministry, showing how the Government proposed to deal with lands that the Natives owned, and wero willing to sell. Ho showed up the Native Department, and stated that ho had issued instructions to all Government officers that if they dealt in Nativelands they would be subjected to instant dismissal.
At the conclusion of the meeting, a vote of hearty thanks was proposed to Sir George Grey and Mr Sheehnn for their addresses, and was responded to with enthusiasm.
To Were, the native chief from Mokau, who has not been into town for fourteen years, came from Mokau on a visit to Sir George Grey.
The s.s. Hinemoa leaves with the ministerial party at o o'clock. Mr Sheehan goes to'see Te Whiti, at Parihaka.
