CALEDONIAN.
Yesterday the manager, Mr James, let a contract for rising from the Caledonian No. 1 level to the Otago upper level, in which are the workings on the Otago lode. The distance between the two levels per* pendicular, is 40 feet, and when the work is completed it will be a great boon to the driving contractors, who often experience difficulty in getting away iheir mullock. The contractors for making this rise started work last night. The contractors for driving are'proceeding a teudily with the dr.iving « alongside the reef, and the manager informs me that since the last breaking down reported a week or two ago, there has been no quartz to speak of broken down. Mclnnes and party will probably start crushing early next week, and the other parties are preparing parcels.. , Heravil and party, the tributers, completed a small crushing of 8 loads *of quartz at Bull's battery, Earaka, yesterday, for the satisfactory return of 33|-ozs melted gold.
