QUEEN OF BEAUTY.

Under the able management of Mr McDonald this mine is being worked in a thoroughly systematic manner. In the No. 6 level the drive at the Piako side of the shaft has been extended up to the Piako boundary, while at the "City" end the face of the drive is within 20 fe»t of the boundary. Stoping has been started in the southern drive from the shaft towards the Piako. The reef is looking first class all through the lower level, gold having lately been seen in the south drive, while during the last day or two the men, when breaking the quartz from the north drive, came upon some nice-looking! pieces of picked stone. The reef varies ; from 5 to 6 feet in thickness all along the level, and is at its largest close up against the Piako boundary. The reef is one of the best defined I have seen, and really looks well. To-day the manager let a contract for sinking a winze between the lso. 5 level and Ifa. 6 or bottom level. The depth of the winze is 30 feet, but that must not be taken as the distance between' the two levels, as the stopes in the lower level are now up a considerable height. When thiswinae is completed it will afford facilities for the further opening up of the level. As the Inspector of Machinery, Mr Jobson, is making an inspection of the boiler and engine, winding has been stopped for today. This has not stopped the work, how* ever, the men being now at the bottom breaking out quartz. - ,_;
