OUR VOLUNTEERS.

Firing fob Distbict Beit.

The seventh competition for the District Belt took place on the Government range on Saturday 7in two squads^ the morning firing at 8 a.m., the afternoon at 1.30 p.m. The weather was in favor of good scores, and good scores were made.' In the morning, as will be seen by reference to our Saturday's issue, Vol. Hoteni, of Native corps, made the excellent score of 68, 33 of which Jwere made at 300 yards, beating the highest score made at the colonial: firing at that range. In the afternoon Volunteer Hennelly, No. 2 H.E.V., distinguished himself at 200 yards by making 38 out of a possible 40/ or two points more than won the first prize at Hokitika this year/ his last seven shots at 200 yards being bull's-eyes. Altogether the firing compares well with the colonial firing, 'and it was for this purpose that the Committee selected the short ranges. It must be remembered that the representatives fired with new short Sniders, considerably superior to the old worn out medium Sniders issued to our volunteers. It must 'also be re-' membered that the Maoris fired with the long Snider, which is: a better Weapon than the medium.. The following were prizewinners:— ./■■;• . ; " " V 200 yds. 300 yds. Tl.
