CRICKET.

Makkied v. Single.

This match was commenced on Saturday last at Parawai. The single won the toss and went in, thus getting the best of a rough wicket which towards the end of the game was very bumpy, and all in fuvour of the bowlers. The single looked stronger on paper, having very .little tail to their eleven and three of the representatives of Auckland on their side, and if one or two men were got rid of easily there .were- others to hand from whom good scores might be expected. Robinson and Curtis, who were so successful the previous Saturday, first faced the bowling of Paul and Steedman. Nodder was long stop, and did his work well. \Wardeli also fielded well at point, but perhaps the best form shown;in the field during the day was that of Bullat third ; man ; it would be a blessing for wicket .'keepers if other fieldsmen in; returning the ball would aim, as he apparently does, at the bails, and not at the wicket-keeper's toes or some imaginary mark a yard over his head. Bobinson scored, fast and made two-thirds of the.runs recorded, when he was given out I.'b. w. to Steedman. Whitford pulled at his first ball from the same bowler which did not get up and was bowled, Crump joined Curtis, who aided by a_ bit of luck had got 13 when to avoid a fast ball he got his leg in front of the wicket.* Paul shortly afterwards strained his foot, the immediate

consequence being a wide, and the married Lawless being absent, not having a" change bowler, were in a fix. However, after a short rest Paul was able to resume, and bowled,Crawford,' who with Crump had been making a stand, each batsman getting double, figures. GoUion did not relish the head balls, and Hewitt was run out by a piece of good fielding on the part of Bull. The innings closed for 73. The innings of the married was not noteworthy except the batting of Steedman, who stopped good balls and hit bad ones, and was caught at short slip off a bumpy one of Whitford'a. There were three men run out, and the total score was 39. The following is the score and analysis. The latter must be taken for what it is worth, as in both cases it must* be wrong if the scores are right. Robinson's figures read very well as will be seen : — SINGLE.
