CRICKET.
A scratch match was played at Parawai on Saturday afternoon between sides selected by Messrs Bell and S. Paul. Mr Paul's side showed up well, but on Mr Bell's were many absentees. Messrs Chew and Pulleine first represented Mr Bell's side, opposed to the bowling of Messrs Lodge and Spencer. The former gentleman was erratic, and so Mr Donovan was substituted, but as he, strangely enough, bowled wide of the mark, Mr Gellibn essayed to part Messrs West and Bell, who had become very troublesome, with lobs. As the batsmen still continued inseparable one bowler more was tried as a change, and shortly after Spencer who had kept up his end well from the beginning, bowled Bell for 17 and got West caught for 26, the highest score on his side. Slator played steadily, and Walker with more practice would get more fives than one, Jackson, who made his first appearance and indeed his first essay this season at cricket, knocked up a dozen
very quickly, and was not out when the innings closed for 89, a good score for 10 men, and which induced the backers of Bell to indulge in visions of half-crowns, more especially as the Belle began bowling well, and with Chew disposed of four men for 1 run from the bat. The hopes of a win; however, were not destined to be realised^ for after Hennelly, who stayed in a long time for 5, had been disposed of, the Captain and Spencer got." together and by careful and very steady'play completely collared the bowling. Slator the long stop slipped about in every direction on the wet ground, and byes were consequently frequent, as also "were -the' widesf 1 and the. result was that with 50 runs and 40 odd extras against them, Bell's side were defeated bykfimrunß and, two wickets. Paul and Spencer played really well, especially;in their defensive operations, and to them is the victory in a great measure due.
