RUM RUNNER.
SEIZED O-N THE HIGH SEAS. By Cable—Fren Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. NEW YORK, March 1. A steamer named Federatship, the largest rum runner in the Pacific, was seized 300 miles off the Golden Gate, after offering resistance to the American revenue cutter Cahokia. The Federalship, with a liquor cargo worth £300,000, left Vancouver 10 days ago. The Cahokia trailed her southward, and obtained definite evidence that she intended to discharge her cargo into small boats landing at Los Angeles. This is the first instance of an arrest at a long distance off shore,, but prohibi tion officials believe seizure on the high seas is legal under the new Treaty, because it was the intention of the ship to evade, the American laws, and the United States claims the right, to seize such wherever they are fcund.
