“THE FARMER’S AVIFE.”

“The Farmer’s Wife,” a farce comedy of types, by Eden Philpott, will be presented at the Theatre Royal on Friday evening next for one night only by a new company of English artists specially seleeeted by the J. C. AVilliamsou firm in England. “The Farmer’s AA’ife” is described as a quaint and original offering, likened by critics to “Bunty Pulls ihe Strings,’’ and “Paddy, the Next Best Tiling,” as it lias a distinctiveness of characters typical of the locality in which the plot is laid. The story is. one of happenings in the lives of a small village community in Devon. Their likes, dislikes, love, humour, and ambitions, have afforded Ihe author almost unlimited material on which to build a play of laughter which also lias a heart appeal. Miss Doris Johnstone, who plays the farmer’s wife is a typically English actress, tall and distinctive, and famed for the many Shakespearean roles she lias appeared m. Townsend AVhitiing, the producer, who also appears as Farmer Applegartli. together with liis wife, A r iolet Ley, also in the caste, were favourites some years ago in the Dominions with Miss Ethel Irving’s Company, in “The AVitness for the Dcfecnce,” and other plays.
