TOO MANY OPERATIONS

SIR UNDO DF.RGUSSO.V3 STATEMENT. By Tf’eeratih—Tresi Association. WELLINGTON, March 25. A statement made at the Medical Conference by Dr. Lindo Fergusson, Dunedin, that too many operations were performed at public hospitals, was discussed at a meeting of the Hospital Board, when a question was asked of the chairman, who at the time was reporting on the Hospital Conference, if there were any grounds for the assertion. It had also been stated that it would be perhaps a good thing for New Zealand if some Hospital Boards went out of existence. The chairman explained that Dr. Unwin (Timaru) was responsible fort the latter statement, and had referred to county hospitals, where young surgeons had to perform operations with instruments not the last word in efficiency. ' Sir Lindo Fcrgusson’s statement was not taken seriously in the discussion, and no motion was passed.
