EVICTIONS IN PARIS.
“ Tear Gas ” Brigade. WIDESPREAD INDIGNATION AROUSED. By Cable —PfeSs Association—Copyrlgnt. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received March 24, 7.55 p.m.) PARIS, March 23. The “tear gas” eviction aroused widespread indignation. The Prefect of the Police denies that he authorised the employment of a gas brigade, and he regrets that women were thus treated. An acute housing crisis has caused a thousand under notice to complain to the police that they fear they will be “gassed out.” [The housing shortage in Paris necessitated the eviction of a, mother and daughter from rooms at Montmartro by means of tear gas. The landlord wanted the rooms for his own son. One of the women pleaded that a daughter had been born in the flat, and that it was impossible to find shelter elsewhere. As they continued to ignore the law, the police were called in. Oas was poured into the room until the women were compelled to open the door with teal's streaming down their faces.]
