August 22. —The overland telegraph line isto be completed to-day, and through communication established 2,000 miles from Adelaide to Port Darwin.—The cable is still interrupted.—The operations of the investigator are retarded near Java, owing to a monsoon.—A bill has been introduced into the Council by the Government for the suppression of betting and gaming houses.—The Mining on Private Property Bill has nearly passed through the committee of the Assembly.—No mails in future will be made up here for California. —A disastrous fire occurred on the Marybryong estate, when three valuable brood mares—Lady Heron, Gildemere, and Agitation—were burned in their boxes. The loss is about £3,000. —Another Australian Conference is projected. Earl Kimberley’s despatches are to be considered amongst other matters. The Victorian Government will not be represented.—The Parliament now sitting, having under its consideration the propriety of subsidising telegraphic communication from Europe to the Victorian Press.-A horrible murder was committed in alane off Little Bourke-street, yesterday. A woman named Dbnoglme killed another named O’Rorkc, and concealed the body for a whole day.— The Admiralty base-bought a small schooner, the first of a fleet for the suppression of the slave trade, to be manned from the squadron.—The Hero was released from quarantine on' Monday, and sailed for Melbourne.—Captain Armstrong has been committed for murder, and some of the crew of tha Carl for felonious assault.—Snow fell near Sydney on Tuesday last.—The A.S.N. Company called a special meeting* of the shareholders to consider the advisability of starting a Californian line. The Adelaide Commissioner . has been appointed for the London Exhibition.—A telegraph" station has been opened at Barrow’s Creek, 1,200 miles from Adelaide.
