Should the followiug from the Courier prove correct, Ballarat may yet have all its former greatness restored, but rather by copper than by gold. The Courier says : —lt is reported that a lode of copper ore has been discovered in Ballarat East. The reef is said to he four feet wide, and to assay at the rate of GO per cent, pure copper. The alleged discoverers refuse at present to state where the lode was situated.” The following from the Ballarat Pos.' hints at apayeble quartz reef being found :—“ Rumor has it that a prospector in Ballarat West lias struck a gold-bearing r<sef that will yieH three ounces to the ton. It is said that the ‘ find’ has been made on private property, and its locality will not be divulged until the vexed question of mining on fee simple has been settled. The reef is said to be in the outskirts of the city.”
