OHINEMURI.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) August 27. I regret to have to inform you of a sad accident which happened at Maungainutu, Upper Waihou, on Sunday last, and which has caused a deep sensation here. It appears that Miss Susan Nicholl and her two nieces—daughters of Mr John Guilding, of Shortland, —were crossing the river in a canoe, when from some cause (as yet unexplained) it capsized. The banks at that place are very steep and the current runs strong. Miss Nicholl was swept under for a considerable distance, and when she rose barely managed to get ashore in a very exhausted condition. The two Misses Guilding—fine girls, aged respectively nine and seven years —have both been drowned, and up to the present time the bodies have not been recovered. Great sympathy is felt for the relatives, who are old and well-known settlers in this district.
Hoiiepa te Rauliihi and party have returned from Tokangamutu. They say that peace is to be the order of the day. The King’s word is “ Cultivate the ground ; then rest and enjoy the fruits thereof.” When Kohepa’s party reached Tokangamutu the King natives had just got in their wheat, and since then they have been assisting them to plant potatoes. They deny that Te Kooti has gone to Mokau with the intention of fighting. They say that he has gone to plant potatoes iu a “ wairenga,” or bush cultivation, and that he has no followers worth talking about
