SERIOUS MINING ACCIDENT.
An accident happened yesterday afternoon in the Mary Ann claim, by which a miner nanied Michael Collins came very near losing his life. It seems that Collins has only been at work in the mine for one day. He was going down below with his mate to commence work, and, although he had a candle in his hand, he walked right into a winze which goes down from the drive. He* fell for a distance of nearly 100 feet, - arid''then fortunately caught on a ledge, which saved him from falling a further distance of 50 feet. When picked up by his males, it was found that' ho bones at all were broken, the injuries received being confined to a very severe wound On the head, the scalp being torn off from a space as large as a man’s hand, and a number of light bruises. He was brought up to the surface, and with assistance he managed to walk to the flat, where he was-put to bed at his place of residence. Dr. Croft was called in, arid ordered him to be sent to the Hospital, where he now is, and we learn progressing favorably. He certainly had a mbst marvellous escape, as the winze is yerv nearly perpendicular.
