She has made a stormy passage across. No communication was obtained with the West Coast. She -left Melbourne on the 7th, and brings 21' saloon passengers, and 23 in the steerage ; six.horses, and 306 tons of cargo for all ports.
MELBOURNE. August 7. Mr Duncan, the General Inspector of Penal Establishments, was attacked on Sunday by a prisoner named Weechurch, and stabbed in the groin. Fortunately the wound is not serious. The Small-pox Sanatorium at Long Gully has hei-n broken up, ns the patients are all convalescent. The cable is still silent. The Victoria Racing Club show a balance of £SOO. The Town Hall organ will he opened to-morrow, aud on Saturday a concert wiil be given by the Mayor. The Permissive Bill has been read a second time by a large majority. I The amended Land Bill is under discussion. The weather is cold and bleak, and several old colonists have lately died. The Bntik of Victoria has declared a dividend of 10 per cent., and the Hobson’s Bay Railway one of 5 per cent. Sugars are very firm ; there is an active demand. Oats are in demand at 3s sd. Prime New Zealand wheat has been quoted at 7s. Sailed: August 4—Northern Light, for Hokitika. SYDNEY. August 7. The Newcastle colliers have had a ballot, which resulted in a majority aguinst the nine hours’ work. They are h: favour of accepting the offers of the companies. The price of coal is likely to be raised from nine to ten shillings. The Assembly have rejected the proposed vote for Australian annexation at the London Exhibition. Ten thousand pounds have been voted for a new silver coinage. The paper company’s mills were sold for £9,600. Magnificent returns continue to come in from Tambaroora. The hill for amalgamating the legal professions has been shelved. A twelve-carat diamond has been found in the Bathurst district. A fire has happened at Rockhampton, and several houses were destroyed, which were insured for £4,000 in the Pacific Company Sydney Company, and Loudon and Liverpool Company. The boilers at the Union Saw Mills at Rockhampton exploded, killing two men aud wouuding ten, some of them fatally. ADELAIDE. August 7th. Mr Todd declines the services of the camels, and says that the gap in the overland line will be reduced to 50 miles this week. The Government have received information of the’ existence of gold in the Northern Territory. The Moonta Directors have raised the wages of their miners. The construction of a branch line to the Roper river is under consideration.
TASMANIA. The Wilson Government have been requested to resume office and call on the Assembly to rescind the no confidence motion. Traffic is to be resumed on the Launcestou and Western railway. THE LATEST. An unpublished telegram from Sydney states that the Assembly have resolved to give the remains of Wentworth a public funeral. The Parliament was prorogued on Tuesday. Wonderful stone is being found in Veyers Holtermen’s claim, at Tambaroora, which lias renewed the miuing mania. The Newcastle miners have settled all their disputes and resumed work. Buyers at Adelaide are offering 5s lOd for good wheat, and none is beiug offered under.
