THE IRISH CHURCH.

It appears that the Church body have invested in various securities, mortgages, railway debenture stock, preference and guaranteed stocks, and Indian Government stock, a sum altogether of £1,576,002 5s sd. The interest derived from these investments averages £4 7s. per cent. —a satisfactory figure. The general Synod of the Irish Church lias at last earned the praise of the Low Church party by three sweeping alterations. It has expunged the Apocrypha bodily from the daily lessons, it has struck out tlie saints names from the calendar, and passed a rubric declaring that the word “ priest,” wherever found in the formularies, is to be held to mean the same as “ presbyter.” The other “ revisions" are to be discussed shortly. Simultaneously with the meeting of the Synod, the various religious societies are now holding their annual meetings in Dublin. These used to be the great religious events of the year, but of late years public interest in them has declined, and instead of occupying several columns in each of the morning papers, they are now disposed of in a single column or so. Among those which have already come off, the Irish Society lias described the success of its operations among the peasantry who have not yet mastered the tongue of the Sassenach ; tho two Protestant orphan societies, one of which devotes itself to the care of the children of mixed marriages, have laid before the public the number of children they have provided for; the Sunday School Society has shown a goodly amount of useful work ; and the Irish Church Mission points to a not inconsiderable sue-' cess in the conversion of Roman Catholics.
