REV. J. W. INGLIS, BALLARAT.

On Sunday, the Ballarat Star states, the Rev. J. W. Ingl is occupied his own pulpit at St. John’s Presbyterian Church. The trial of the past few weeks has told considerably upon him both in body and in mind. The first psalm he gave was very appropriate for the occasion, commencing “All mine iniquities blot out, Tliy face hide from my siu ; Create a clean heart, Lord, reuevv A right spirit me within.” He took his text from the 51st chapter of the Psalms, 16th and 17th verses, in these words—“ For Thou desirest not sacrifice, else would I give it. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and a contrite heart, 0 God, thou wilt not despise.” Mr Inglis in his remarks dwelt on the enormity of sin ; and the only way to be cleansed from sin was to seek God with a humble and contrite heart, and He would then cleanse the sinner from all his iniquities. He said—“ It is God, in his infinite mercy, that brings sin home to sinners.” At the conclusion of the sermon, the reverend gentleman said that today seemed like commencing his ministerial duties afresh among the congregation of St. John’s ; the past, he hoped, would only make him more eager for the good work. He then thanked the congregation for its past conduct, and hoped that, as he was entering upon, as it were, a new ministry, this feeling would be continued. Mr Inglis also mentioned that the text ho had just delivered was the same as that with which he had opened his ministry in Ballarat three years ago. In the evening the text was taken from Luke, 15th chapter and 10th verse, in these words—- “ Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” The rev. gentleman has, with the advice of his session, and medical adviser, taken a three weeks’ holiday to recruit his strength. During Mr Inglis’s absence, his place will be fil-k-d, we bear, by Mr Scales from Adelaide
