ARRIVAL OF THE ALHAMBRA FROM MELBOURNE. HOKITIKA. April 17. The Alhambra arrived at 8 a.m . with the following passengers : —Messrs Cassius, Davidson, Harrison, James Smith, Miss Marlin, Mrs Patterson, Mrs Clogston, and three children. The Alhambra left Melbourne on the 11th. Robert Egerton, charged with passing valueless cheques, lias been further remanded. There has been a Ministerial fete at Climes, on the occasion of laying the foundation stone of the new Town Hall. The Ministry have visited Gipps’ Land, and promised an extension of railways in that direction. The accident to Mr Nixon, who fel 1 from his horse, resulted in concussion of the brain, but the patient is going on favourably. One innings and single wicket match between Victoria and New South Wales are both in favour of Victoria. By advices received, it appears that the telegraphic charges between England and Australia will be double what the amount was previously announced. His Excellency the Governor lias subscribed £2O in aid of the burnt out theatricals. The Our Hope has sailed for Dunedin. Wheat is quoted at 5s lOd ; flour, £l3 to £l3 ss. The proposed National Exhibition at Sydney is likely to be a great success. Subscriptions for the survivors of the New Guinea expedition are progressing. Hamlet won the Queen’s Play. Readit, the Circus performer, is dead. Foul play is suspected. Two men have been arrested on suspicion. Pure copper ore has been discovered in the Darling district. Wool market affected by the mail news (?). Arrived : Blanche, Whirlwind, Helen, Danger, Oscar, Lady Bird, from New Zealand ports. Sailed : Prince, for Auckland ; John Knox, for Lyttleton. Newcastle. Arrived : Moa, from Auckland. Sailed : Ellinglove, for Lyttleton. At Adelaide a company proposes to construct a railway across the continent with 200 millions (?) of British capital. Parliament has re-asnsmbled. A vigorous opposition to the Ministry is expected. Arrived : Tell, from New Zealand. Town flour, £l3 10s; prime wheat, 5s Gd. Auckland, 8 p.m. In the Supreme Court the case of Gow v. Fraser stands adjourned for a week.
