KAUWAERANGA HIGHWAY DISTRICT BOARD.

A meeting of the Kauwaeranga District Board was held last evening, at the office, Sealy-strcet. Present: Mr Burgess, in the chair; and Messrs Liosoy, Scott, Mills, Wallnutt; T. B. Cameron, engineer; M. J. Porslon, secretary. The minutes of tlio previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence, &c. From George Lipsey calling attention to the state of the footpath along Baileystreet from Willougliby-stioet to the pound, and offering to do the necessary work for £8 10s. The Boaid resolved that the work should be done, provided the Engineer leported favourably upon it at next meeting, and that the expense be borne out of the pound money. From Mr J. Heron stating that ho was ready to contribute £lO towards the making of Pollen-street from Grey-street to the Kauwaeranga River—the amount to be deducted from his rates. The offer was accepted ; the work to be under the supervis’on of the Board Engineer. From R. Adams, calling attention to the state of the thoroughfare in Murphy’s Lane and Sandes-street. It was resolved to let the matter stand over until next meeting. From R. 13. Lusk, Provincial Tieasurer, enclosing a cheque for £123 4s, for roacl money. From J. Butt, requesting the Board to contribute £7 to the expenses incurred in the matter of the counter-petition against the proposed Thames Municipality. The Board said they had not the money to devote to the purpose, and could not entertain the application. From E. \V. Hollis, asking for permission to lay bricks in the roadway in Pollen-street, during the erection of Dr Fox’s residence, the bricks so deposited not to interfere with the traffic or waterpipes. The Board agreed to grant the reques under certain conditions. From 11. Chamberlain, offering the stone lately taken from the Ashley shaft for the use of the roads. The Board requested the Secretary to thank Mr Chamberlain for his offer, but express a doubt whether the stone would not coot more to cart than it was worth. FINANCE. The following financial statement was laid before the Board. Financial Slate 15th April, 187*2.

Accounts to the amount of £244 15s were ordered to be paid. The Chairman* said one thing 1 struck him forcibly—the smallness of the amount of rates collected since last meeting. The Secretary said a number of persons had been summoned in the R.M. Court and judgment obtained against them. The Chairman and Mr Wall mitt were appointed a sub-committee to see what ratepayers had paid, and who the owners wero of certain rateable properties, with a view to the necessary 14 day’s notice being given prior to legal proceedings being taken to recover all amounts outstanding. Engineer’s Report. Ihe following report was read : To the Chairman and members of the Kauwaeranga District Board. Gentlemen, —I have the honor to inform you that I have completed the portion of Grey street from its intersection with Pollen street to the bridge in Mackay street, less a few loads of gravel to fill the ruts on the completion of Henle street. I have also to inform you that I have about the half of Ileale street completed. If the weather keeps favourable it will enable me to complete the ten chains in one week from date. If the Board purpose completing the footpath on the north side of the liape Road to protect Mr C.'ihb’s property, it will cost about £lO. As to the footpath in Mackay street, opposite the Church of England, I have made arragnements tu commence on Tuesday, the 16th ilist ,to form the footpath, and kerb and gravel the same in Mackay street. —I have, &c\, T. B. Cameron, Engineer. Shortland, 15th April. 1872. Mr E. L. Millett said he and some neighbours had agreed to subscribe £4 towards finishing the footpath and kerbiug in the cutting in rolleston street, near his residence. The Board said they would consider the matter, and return an answer by next meeting. extension of contactor’s time. Mr Tiiackery, contractor, said he found he should he unable to finish his contract, for the works in Sea ley street within the contract time, and requested a month’s extension of time. The Board said they did not like (o interfere with the contract, hut (hat if all the gravel was up at the depot within a fortnight he could go on. The Board then adjourned.
