COURTS.

POLICE COURT.— Yesterday. Before Jackson Keddiu.c, Esq., ii.m. Drunkenness. —Bartholomew O’ Ilalloran ami Bernard Fitz Gerald forfeited bail for non-appearance on a charge of being drunk and incapable.—George Lipsey and Robert Wilson, each charged with the above offence, were fined 20s and costs; or 48 hours’ imprisonment respectively. Breach of the Peace. —George Lipsey and Eruati (a native) were charged with committing a breach of the peace on Saturday last by fighting in a public thoroughfare.—Constable Furlong stated that he saw the two defendants fighting at Butt’s corner on Saturday. Lipsey struck the native first. He saw no provocation given.—George Bull deposed : that he saw the fight alluded to. Lipsey struck the native in the first place. He saw no provocation given by Ernati. The defendant Lipsey was intoxicated. Eruati said he was in the sitting room of Butt’s hotel when Lipsey came in. Eruati then proceeded towards the door to leave the room, but Lipsey prevented him f.iom so doing. He (Eruati) then went across the room to another room, and was folic wed by Lipsey, who made a blow at the native when they were outside the hotel. Eruati guarded the strike, and closed with Lipsey, and fell with him to the ground. The B.M. said he considered the native was only acting in self defence, and, therefore, dismiss him. The defendant Lipsey would be bound over to keep the peace for 13 months, himself in £2O, and two sureties of £lO each.
