OHINEMURI.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT),
15th February, 1872. You have already reported the stoppage of the mail. The service has not been interfered with on account of its being a mail, but through jealousy on the part of a few who wish to get the job. It is freely circulated hero that Europeans have also a hand in the pic : as for the truth of this I will not vouch, but a meeting is to be held to day to investigate the case. Dr Pollen and Mr Mackay have arrived for said purpose, and I have no doubt but that all that is necessary will be done for the benefit of the public. Should it turn out that Europeans have been aiding and abetting the natives in their present work, they should be made an example of to deter others from interfering with the progress of the country. It seems to me that no sooner is there an opportunity of getting rid of the “ Ohinernuri difficulty ” than some of our would-be leading men step in and do their endeavours to bring us back to our old state. There can be no doubt but a great step in advance has been made within the last few months, which would very soon have culminated in the opening up of this country, had it not been for the intermeddling of some busybody.
At twelve o’clock the whole of the natives that are here at present mustered at To Pacroa. Te Him and More Kuril being still at the fishing station Dr Pollen and Mr Mackay called in on their way’ up, mid had a talk with Te Him, who seems to be indifferent bow the matter goes. The meeting passed off very quietly’, Mr Mackay having it all his own way. lie seems to have all the natives here properly’ under his control. It has not yet been made public whether or not Europeans have been at the bottom of the present disturbance: I suppose that will come out in due course.
Mr Mackay leaves for the East Const tomorrow to settle a small row about the telegraph.
